Built in 1898, the Ark has had many uses: a gymnasium (and site of the first "Big Four" basketball game in North Carolina in 1906), a cafeteria, the campus laundry and a recreation center. Today, it is used primarily for dance classes and student production rehearsals. The Ark got its name because its long, narrow walkway forced people to enter "two by two."
