Ewald W. “Bud” Busse, MD, ’86, associate provost emeritus and dean of Medical and Allied Health Education at Duke University from 1974 - 1982, was one of the world’s foremost authorities on human aging and a founder of the field of geriatric psychiatry. He joined the Duke faculty as chairman of the Department of Psychiatry in 1953, a position he held for 21 years. Busse was founding director of the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, serving from 1957 - 1970. Duke University honored him in 1985 by dedicating the E.W. Busse Gerontology Building, which is located on the medical center campus.
