Frederic Moir Hanes (1883-1946), arrived in 1931 as a physician although he was also a pathologist and neurologist, and became a professor of medicine in 1933. Later, he became Chair of the Department of Medicine, beginning the Department of Internal Medicine Fund, known today as the Private Diagnostic Clinic. The Elizabeth P. Hanes House, named for Hanes’ wife, originally a dormitory and teaching facility for Nursing students, was constructed in 1952. In addition to the Hanes House, the Hanes family funded many construction, research, and beautification projects at Duke University, including gifts toward construction of the medical school library reading room.
